Gosling Free Kick Seals U17 Cup Progress

19/12/19

The U17s made it through to the next round of the county cup after a 1-0 win away at Pontefract u18s.

Town made a bright start in tough windy conditions when the ball was played through to Gabe Hopkinson who put his shot just wide.

Town kept coming forward and had another big chance when Ethan Thropes through ball was met on the volley by Alfie Dean. Dean’s pull back flashed across the face of goal but couldn’t be forced in.

Pontefract’s main threat was from long throw-ins. The four or five that were launched into the box were dealt with well by the two centre halves Lewis Dobson and Harry Lee.

The second half started the same as the first with Town pushing for a goal. They thought they broke the deadlock when Alex Hields was brought down in the box for a pen. Joe Gosling smashed the ball high but it was emphatically saved by the Ponty keeper.

Ponty almost took the lead themselves if not for a last minute goal line clearance by Dobson.

Town finally broke the deadlock when Joe Gosling stepped up and whipped a 25 yard free kick into the top corner.

1-0 it finished. Town through to the 4th round of the County Cup.

Town: Jack Wade, Bailey Calvert, Alex Helids, Connor Whelan, Harry Lee, Lewis Dobson, Joe Caygill, Danny Mutch, Ethan Thorpe, Alfie Dean, Malaki Mason, Joe Navier, Adam Kellett, Joe Gosling, Gabe Hopkinson, Joe Payette
