Ladies Into County Cup Semi-Final

20/01/20

Farsley Celtic Juniors Ladies 1-3 Town Ladies

Quarter final day in the West Riding County Cup and a tough away fixture against Farsley.

The pitch passed an early morning inspection but the testing surface made it difficult for both teams to play football.

Town kicked up hill in the first half and created a number of openings with Rosie Gill and Sophie Tinson both going close, but it would be Farsley that took the lead, against the run of play, with a stinging drive from the edge of the area that gave Kelly Jackson no chance.

One of the great characteristics of this Town Ladies squad is their ability to bounce back from adversity, and the midfield trio of Grace Adams, Beth Jennings and Beth Davies quickly retook control of the midfield engine room and continued to create a number of openings, but half time arrived with Farsley 1-0 ahead.

It would be important for Town Ladies to start the second half on the front foot - they did this in no uncertain style and were back on level terms within five minutes as Davies completed a mazy run with a fierce drive that went in off the post.

Then followed Town's best spell of the game with Em Crispin a constant threat down the left wing and Tinson working hard and causing numerous problems through the middle.

The next goal would be vital, and Davies and Jennings would be at the centre of it, winning the ball in midfield and hitting Crispin with a pin point pass. Crispin dribbled her way past a couple of players sped towards the Farsley goal, and just as it looked liked she would be closed down by the Farsley defence, she clipped a left footed effort into the top corner of the net - a candidate for goal of the season.

Town continued to build pressure and Gill scored the third for Town after an exhilarating six player move which started at the back and ended with Crispin crossing a beautiful ball across goal for Gill to caress the ball into the back of the net.

At the other end, the Town defence kept things under control, restricting Farsley to a handful of openings.

All in all a highly encouraging performance in difficult circumstances, and Town earn a place in the Semi-Final of the County Cup where they will meet either Brighouse or Leeds United.

It was encouraging to see Kirsty McGregor back in action after a prolonged spell on the sidelines, and also good to see Holly Mitchell step up to the first team after encouraging performances in the Development team.
