HTAFC Ladies 0-2 Chorley

07/10/19

Harrogate Town Ladies’ historic FA Cup run came to an end on Sunday as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to higher league Chorley AFC at The CNG Stadium.

A run of 188 minutes without conceding a goal in the competition came to an end as Chorley opened the scoring in the eighth minute of the first half as their striker broke through the Harrogate defence and managed to get a shot away, which initially hit the post, but then bounced off a Harrogate body and against Kelly Jackson-Powell and then over the goal line.

The game was a very close affair and chances were few and far between, with Town’s first real chance coming in the 23rd minute as Holly Smith tried her luck from distance but her shot went just wide.

Minutes later Chorley would double their lead, In the 29th minute a weaving run from the visiting attacker evaded the whole Harrogate defence and allowed the striker to drill a low shot past Jackson-Powell and into the back of the net.

Aside from a Beth Davies strike from distance, goal scoring chances weren’t a regular occurrence for either side in the closing stages of the first half with Town entering the break in the unfamiliar position of being behind in a FA Cup game for the first time this season.

The game continued to be a close affair and became quite scrappy in the second half with Jackson-Powell denying Chorley on two separate occasions with two fantastic well-timed saves.

In the 67th minute Town’s best chance of the second half arrived as Grace Adams was found in the box but she just failed to wrap her foot around the ball and test the Chorley Keeper.

Unfortunately Town couldn’t get themselves back into the game which meant that they were eliminated from the FA Cup, but having scored 15 goals, kept two clean sheets and progressed to the 2nd Round Proper for the first time in their history, they can rightly feel proud.

It definitely hasn’t been a disappointing cup run and will have been a positive experience for Town to learn from as they now concentrate on the league campaign.
