Harrogate youngsters complete NCS programme!

10/09/21

It’s been a busy summer for 78 young people in Harrogate who have just finished their summer National Citizen Service (NCS) flagship programme!

In partnership with the Harrogate Town Community Foundation, the 15-17 year olds gave over 2000 hours to the local community while making friendships and great memories along the way.

They took part in new challenges, experienced exciting activities and developed vital skills that will support them later in life.

Five social action projects were planned and delivered in the Harrogate district which supported charities such as Harrogate Mind. The youngsters were also involved projects which supported older people, the Harrogate District Hospital and the Harrogate Homeless Project.

In total, Harrogate’s youngsters raised over £1500 which was donated and then used to create care packages which included much needed items for those in need.

For example, one group named ‘A little helping hand’ raised over £450 for the Harrogate Homeless Project. 20 care packages were created which included shower gel, face masks, toiletries as well as chocolate and sweets.

After still having money left over, the group decided on request by Harrogate Homeless Project that they bought fresh and frozen food for those currently living within the homeless shelter, alongside five sleeping bags donated by a member of our group. The remaining money was donated as cash to the Harrogate Homeless Project, who had suffered severe financial difficulty due to Covid-19.

Grace Robinson, who led the flagship programme for the Harrogate Town Community Foundation was proud of the “impact and legacy” that the young people have created.

“After such a challenging year for everyone, our NCS young people spent their summer giving back to the community and they made such a positive impact on a number of people and charities,” Grace said.

“Not only have the young people spent time giving back to their community, they have also overcome many challenges, gained skills, confidence and friendships to take forward in life and they should be proud of not only the impact they’ve had but the legacy they’ve created.”

A massive well done and congratulations to everyone who took part!
