Will Smith commits his long term future to Town

22/06/21

We are pleased to announce that Will Smith has committed his future to the club after signing a new long term deal.

The defender has made over 80 appearances during his first two seasons with for Simon Weaver’s side, winning silverware in both. Smith is now looking forward continuing his journey with Town.
“I’m very excited,” Smith said. “It’s going to be another good few years.

“I was buzzing when the Gaffer approached me and said he wanted me to sign a new deal. I’m ready to accept the challenge and hopefully we can kick on again and go further.

“I’ve learned a lot in the last two years. When I first arrived I was only a young lad and now I’ve grown up a lot and become better as a player and matured.

“It’s been a great learning curve for me and to say I’m still 22-years-old, I’ve played a fair few games now and that’s only going to make me better.”

With the season fast approaching, the 22-year-old is now looking to “kick on” again in the 2021/22 campaign.

“The next step is to push on and to get the club further and achieve more things. Maybe another promotion whether that’s this year or in the next couple, we definitely want to kick on and show people how good we can be.

“I’m so excited to get back on the pitch, it looks in very good condition so hopefully we can get that home crowd back because we’ve missed them and then we can get a fair few wins and make it our place again where we win at home every week.”

Manager Simon Weaver was also delighted for Smith to sign the new deal.

“Will’s played a huge part in our progress as a club. He’s a strong, young player which is developing all the time and he was unlucky with an injury last year, but came back and immediately made his mark in his first game back. It shows a lot about his character and his rehab work.

“Overall he’s a strong, dominant centre-half that’s young and in the modern game, there’s not too many around that want to put their head through everything but he’s a good footballer as well. He’s a player who also listens to everything intently and wants to do well in the game.”
