Defender Kyle Ferguson is our Second Summer Signing

13/06/22

We’re delighted to welcome 6ft5 defender Kyle Ferguson to Town.

At the age of 22, Ferguson is very much in the early days of his footballing career but has already played football in America, Sweden, Ireland and most recently England with National League outfit Altrincham, where he signed in February 2022.

Although spending a short time in England’s fifth division, the young Scotsman boasted some impressive statistics, including winning 87% of his aerial duels – the best in the division.

Our second signing of the summer also has football in the blood as he’s the son of former Scotland international Barry Ferguson, as well as cousin to Lewis Ferguson who plays for Aberdeen and the Scotland first team.

The defender is now "buzzing" to get going with his new teammates.

“I’m buzzing to get the deal done," Ferguson said. "I spoke to the Gaffer three or four weeks ago and it got moving quickly and deal was done pretty quick.

“I joined Altrincham late just after January so only had three or four months of the season but played about 10 games and really enjoyed my time. I’m thankful as well as they gave me an opportunity to play and move up. Now I’m definitely looking forward to get going here.

“It’s a massive factor (to play in the Football League). That was the aim when is signed for Altrincham. I signed a short contract as it was in the back of my mind. I said I wanted to get into the Football League and I’ve done that in nine games. The hard work doesn’t stop now though, I’ve got to keep going, keep working hard and hopefully become a really good player for Harrogate.

“My aims personally are to play as many games as possible. I know it’s cliché but I want to get out on the pitch and show the fans what I can do. Also I want to help the team concede as few goals as possible and keep clean sheets.

“I’m an aggressive defender, I love the physical side of the game and I’ll never shy away from a header or tackle. I also like to think I can play as well and I think I’ll really suit the style of play that the Gaffer wants to implement.

“I’m so excited. I’ve just got back from my holiday and pre-season is all I’ve been thinking about. I’m really looking forward to it, getting the games played and get going for the season.”

Manager Simon Weaver believes Ferguson can have a big impact on the team’s defence, with his height and power being desirable attributes.

“I’ve watched every minute of Kyle at Altrincham and we’re convinced he can go from strength to strength.
“He will add height and presence, but he’s also mobile, which are qualities you rarely see together.

“He has shown great desire in his young career so far to really kick on in the game, he’s been prepared to move out of his comfort zone and play in different countries, we’re confident he’s on an upward trajectory and look forward to seeing that progress continue with us.”

Ferguson will wear number 24 at the club.
